Welcome to The Artisan Pages! If you’re here, I can imagine you and I have a couple things in common. We share a desire to create and a hunger to slow down. We prioritize quality and value over quantity and excess. We’re tired of the noise, the busyness, the constant not-enoughness that the world reminds us we are… and we’re seeking something more.
As I thought about what kind of message I wanted to convey to you through this blog, the word "artisan" kept circulating in my head. An artisan is a skilled worker who uses traditional techniques to create products with their hands. In essence, we create value by developing our skills as a tradesman or woman. While I don't have one specific trade, I like to think of myself as a creator of all kinds of things. So you can anticipate that I will be sharing with you the ways I've been able to cut my shopping bill in order to make more things at home, from made-from-scratch meals to homemade cleaning supplies and beauty products. And guess what? I'm still learning! This is not meant to be a perfect journey, and there will certainly be failed attempts along the way. But truly, nothing is impossible to the person who is willing to learn. I no longer see the value I provide to my family in my paycheck, but in the work of my hands and the disposition of my heart. I invite you to listen in as I pursue a life of value through creativity, and hopefully empower you to do the same.
I'm 25 years old, and my husband, Carter, and I just celebrated one year together this last July! While we both work in the city, we live in a 900 square-foot condo that rests at the base of the mountains in the beautiful and breathless Washington state. In the future, we have dreams of starting a family, moving out to the country, and will most likely spend our days living off the land and restoring old vehicles.
For the last two and a half years, I've been working as a nurse on a Medical/Oncology ICU in Seattle. I'm blessed to be able to say that I love my job, my patients, and my coworkers. Having such an intense job makes me crave the simpler things in life. Making food at home forces me to slow down, tune off the many things that vie for my attention, and process my thoughts. Otherwise, it can feel like my mind is a constant buzz of noise. I'm sure many of you could say the same.
It's encouraging to see that so many people are craving a slower lifestyle, whether that be in homemade meals or spending more time outdoors... and they're actively pursuing it! Wherever you are at on your journey, I hope that I can lend a helping hand.
